What would happen to my pets if something happened to me?
....a question often not asked until it is too late.

We all care deeply for our pets, but what would happen if we weren't around to provide this care? Please consider taking the following steps to ensure your pets are cared for in an emergency or if your pets outlive you:

1. Arrange a temporary caregiver. Make sure this person has a key to your house and instructions on how to feed and care for your animals. You may also wish to find a back-up person in case your temporary caregiver is unavailable. Keep your temporary caregiver's name and contact information on an emergency card to carry with you at all times and affix a copy of this information to the inside of your front door. Click here for a Pet Emergency Card.

2. Arrange a permanent caregiver and an alternate permanent caregiver. Find a friend or relative you trust who would be willing to take your animals if you could no longer care for them. If you do not know anyone who would be willing to do this, please consider enrolling your pets in the Placer SPCA's Surviving Pets Program. This program provides a variety of options, including setting up a trust for your pets. For information about this brand new program, please call or e-mail the contact information listed below.

3. Seek legal advice in drafting your will to provide your caregivers legal guardianship and instructions. While drafting your will, please consider adding the Placer County SPCA as a beneficiary. Our tax ID number is 94-2607682.

You may also contact the Fund Development Associate at the Placer SPCA for more information about planned giving options and for a referral list of attorneys, certified public accountants and financial planners who are knowledgeable about estate planning and familiar with the Placer SPCA. In addition to wills, there are many planned giving options that can maximize your charitable giving, often saving you money and saving your family and loved ones the time and cost of probate court.

For information about planned giving, adding the Placer SPCA to your will or trust or the Placer SPCA's new Surviving Pets Program, please contact the Fund Development Associate at 916-782-7722, x. 102, funddevelopment@placerspca.org.
