The Placer SPCA was privileged to participate in
the "Pets for Life" Training Program, a two-week intensive training
program developed by the Humane Society of the United States and
the Denver Dumb Friends League in Denver Colorado.
The curriculum for this training was based on studies
of people who have relinquished their pets to animal shelters and
on focus groups consisting of pet owners who struggled to keep their
pets when faced with challenges such as animal behavior problems,
human health issues (e.g., allergies to pets), pet restrictions
in rental housing, unrealistic expectations, and changes in family
lifestyle that may lead people to break the bond with their animal
companion.
In addition to providing our staff with this training,
we brought back informative behavior handouts to share with pet
owners in our community. Please use them and encourage others to
do the same. Our goal in providing this information to you is to
help you obtain the resources you need to support a healthy and
rewarding relationship for you and your pet. We hope this information
helps pet owners to work through any issues they might be having
with their pet and ultimately reduce the number of animals being
surrendered to shelters for behavior problems. If you require more
information on a specific topic, please call our Behavior Department
directly at 916-782-7722 ext. 258.
Funding for The HSUS Pets For Life National Training
Center was provided by the cable television network Animal Planet;
FrontlineŽ; the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust; and other foundations
and donors, including The Humane Society of the United States.
