Em"barking" on New Opportunities

What’s all the buzz about?  This year Placer SPCA is announcing two new major endeavors.  The first is the opening of the Placer SPCA Second Chances Thrift Store, and the second is a brand new event, Barktoberfest, scheduled for the first week of October.

Placer SPCA Chances Thrift Store will open Summer 2010 and will be located at the intersection of Washington Blvd. and Junction Blvd. in Roseville, just around the corner from our Companion Animal Center.

We are very excited about this project.  It has been a learning experience for us as we navigate through all the steps involved in opening a new business.  As we approach the final countdown, we know many of our volunteers and supporters are ready with their donations of household items and clothes, and we'll be able to accept them shortly.

The Second Chances Thrift Store will be open six days a week, and that means a lot of volunteers are needed.  We are actively looking for volunteers to sort and price all the great stuff we are expecting, as well as work on the sales floor.

We are deeply grateful for the support of the Roseville Rotary, JC Penney, Dan Richards, Lauren Jones, Continental Display, and our volunteer committee members for all their support in getting the store ready.

For more information about the Thrift Store, please visit www.placerspca.org/secondchances.

Barktoberfest is a unique new event coming up on October 2 and 3.  For years, we have wanted to have a family- and dog-friendly event like this, and now that have the opportunity we are doing it up big!  We are calling this our Festival for Canines and Their Well-Behaved Human Companions. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are available.

Keep your eyes open leading up to Barktoberfest for Custom Dog Houses, built by local architects and construction company teams. The Custom Dog Houses will be raffled during Barktoberfest.

Saturday, October 2, we will hold Barks, Brats and Bids from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  This will be an elegant wine, beer and food tasting event, and, yes, dogs are welcome!  An entry ticket of $30 includes all refreshments.  The evening will feature a silent auction as well.

Sunday, October 3 is the big Family Festival of Barktoberfest.  This is a free event, and of course your dog is welcome. The day kicks off at 9:00 am with the Doggie Parade (yes, people are welcome!).  Stay to visit vendors, enter in games and contests, and enjoy food, music, and the company of other dog lovers.  The Festival will end at 2:00 pm.

Both portions of Barktoberfest are being held at Renesas (formerly NEC), at 7501 Foothills Blvd., Roseville.

It is always challenging to introduce a new event.  We are doing our best to get the word out, and you can help!  If you have a location where we can distribute our Barktoberfest bookmarks, please let me know.  For more information about Barktoberfest, please visit www.placerspca.org/barktoberfest.

As always, we appreciate your continued support of Placer SPCA and our vision: that every adoptable companion animal in Placer County has a home.

Sincerely,
Leilani Vierra

Barks and Meows for BOW WOW!

Placer SPCA gratefully acknowledges the efforts of the Boys of Winchester and Women of Winchester (BOW WOW) Club for their efforts at their annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 20.  Comprised of members of the Winchester Country Club of Meadow Vista, BOW WOW golfers took to the fairway for the benefit of the homeless animals at Placer SPCA.

Donations for the day to Placer SPCA totaled $29,284.74.  Participants donated food as well as dog and cat beds and toys for the animals waiting for their forever homes at Placer SPCA.  The staff, board, and animals of the Placer SPCA are deeply grateful for BOW WOW’s continued support.
