Placer SPCA Foster ParentingVolunteer Foster Care Program

Before they can find their permanent loving home, some of our animals need temporary foster homes to receive some special love and care.

The most frequent need for foster homes, especially between the months of April-October, are newborn kittens and their mothers. Puppies are also placed in foster homes until they are old enough to be spayed or neutered. Animals recovering from surgery or other medical treatment or simply needing a little extra TLC and socialization are cared for in foster homes as well.

To become a foster parent, please sign up for the next available class, listed below. Depending on the needs of the animals you wish to foster, you may also need to take additional classes, such as dog and cat socialization. All Placer SPCA volunteers are asked to attend Volunteer Orientation as well, either before or after the Foster Volunteer Class.

Teen Foster Program

Throughout the year, one of our greatest needs is for foster homes to care for vulnerable newborn kittens and their mothers. Foster families help keep kittens healthy and allow them to get the human contact they need to grow up to be wonderful pets. The Teen Foster Program is an ideal hands-on volunteer opportunity for teens 13 and older seeking community service hours.

Teen Foster Program Requirements:

  • Caring and respect for animals
  • At least 13 years of age
  • At least one parent willing to oversee and help with the care of kittens
  • No one in the family is allergic to cats
  • A small space in your home where fosters can be isolated from other animals
  • Ability and willingness to dedicate the time necessary to provide feeding and care

To participate, the teen and one parent must attend a special training class and interview.

If you are a teen that is interested in becoming a kitten foster, please contact our Education Department at 916-782-7722 ext. 253 or 530-885-7387 ext. 253 or by e-mail at humaneedu@placerspca.org.

View and share a program flyer.

Following the training, the teen and parent will be asked to participate in an interview prior to being assigned foster animals. All necessary supplies to care for the animals will be provided at no expense. The average length of time for a kitten to need a foster home is three to six weeks.
